Understanding Demyelination
Myelin is the protective fatty sheath insulating nerve fibers throughout the brain, optic nerves, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system. In demyelinating disorders, abnormal immune system activity attacks this protective layer, causing inflammation, scarring (sclerosis), and slowed or interrupted neurological impulses.
Because symptoms can appear unpredictably in episodic flare-ups (relapses) or progress gradually, early diagnosis using specialized neuroimaging and biomarkers is critical to prevent long-term neurological disability and preserve neural pathways.
